Abstract

In key areas such as the mouth of the Cuojian River and Labi Village, two TCM873 millimeter-wave radars are deployed, each oriented toward potential debris‑flow source zones that pose a secondary risk of river blockage. By leveraging the radars’ real-time detection of target range, velocity, and other parameters, combined with visual recognition and analysis, these systems continuously monitor debris‑flow dynamics, providing data support for assessing secondary hazard risks.

On August 26, 2026, a major disaster struck Jilong County in Shigatse City, Tibet, triggered by a debris flow chain reaction caused by an ice and rock collapse on the Nepalese side, resulting in casualties and substantial property damage.

Following the disaster, secondary risks such as potential landslide masses, loose deposits, and river blockages persist. To mitigate these secondary hazards and ensure on-site safety, relevant authorities have launched emergency monitoring efforts, with a particular focus on tracking debris‑flow dynamics and changes in river conditions.

During this rescue operation, an integrated radar–vision monitoring system equipped with Nanoradar millimeter-wave radar was deployed on site. By fusing radar and visual sensing technologies, it provided data support for monitoring the risks of secondary disasters.

The practical role of Nanoradar in emergency monitoring

01|Real-time monitoring of debris flows to mitigate the risk of secondary disasters

In key areas such as the Cuojiang River estuary and Labi Village, two TCM873 millimeter-wave radars are deployed, each oriented toward potential debris‑flow source zones that pose a secondary river‑blocking risk. By leveraging the radars’ real-time detection of target range, velocity, and other parameters, combined with visual recognition and analysis, these systems continuously monitor debris‑flow dynamics, providing data support for assessing secondary hazard risks.

02|River channel water condition monitoring, enabling real-time tracking of flow variations

Another radar, oriented toward the Guoba Nuqu river channel, integrates with visual‑based technologies to continuously monitor water‑flow dynamics, comprehensively measuring key parameters such as flow width, sediment‑water level, flow velocity, and discharge. This provides a solid basis for tracking changes in river conditions and for mitigating risks associated with abnormal flood events and river blockages.

03|All-weather detection, supporting continuous monitoring

Emergency monitoring in alpine canyons must contend with complex terrain, rainfall, and diurnal variations in illumination. Millimeter-wave radar employs active sensing, independent of visible-light illumination, thereby providing technical support for continuous on-site monitoring day and night.

In this application, the radar has been further customized by the customer for geological hazard scenarios and integrated into an all‑in‑one radar‑vision monitoring system, complementing other monitoring methods. From sensor data acquisition and analysis to risk assessment and emergency response, each stage operates in seamless coordination, collectively ensuring on‑site safety.

Disaster risk monitoring is critical to public safety, and precise sensing serves as an essential foundation for risk prevention.

Nanoradar will continue to drive advancements in millimeter-wave radar technology, providing reliable sensing capabilities for professional monitoring equipment and contributing technological expertise to disaster risk prevention and public safety.
