Breaking Through Blind-Spot Challenges: Millimeter-Wave Radar Powers Safe Compaction Operations
Business Challenges
As a core piece of construction equipment, the road roller faces multiple safety challenges during operation: uneven and undulating job sites, muddy and slippery conditions, concurrent operations involving multiple pieces of equipment, large driver blind spots, and limited environmental perception—all of which significantly increase the risk of collision accidents. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development’s “Report on Production Safety Accidents in Housing and Municipal Engineering Projects in 2020,” a total of 689 such accidents occurred nationwide that year, including 26 incidents involving injuries caused by road rollers, underscoring the severity of the safety risks associated with their operation.
S5 Expressway “9·19” Vehicle Collision Accident
On September 19, 2023, a serious vehicle collision occurred on the bridge-head construction section of the S5 Lhasa–Zedang Expressway project in Zhanang County, Tibet, resulting in direct economic losses exceeding RMB 3 million.
Guzhen County “September 12” Vehicle Injury Accident
On September 12, 2023, during asphalt paving work on County Road 314 in Guzhen County, Anhui Province, Chen from Anhui Chengrui illegally entered the construction zone and was run over and killed. The company involved ultimately paid compensation of RMB 1.7 million and was fined RMB 1.6 million.
Road Roller Crushing Accident in Tongxin County
On January 4, 2024, at the maintenance site of Highway G344 in Tongxin County, Ningxia, Zhang from Dalian Lihe illegally stood in the blind spot behind a road roller. While the driver was operating the machine, Zhang was run over and subsequently died despite emergency medical efforts. The accident resulted in compensation of RMB 1.26 million and a fine of RMB 330,000.
Development Trends
Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transport (Document No. 6 of 2023 issued by Jiangsu Transportation Science Institute) explicitly stipulates that construction machinery such as road rollers must be mandatorily equipped with intelligent collision-avoidance systems, and this requirement has been fully implemented—100%—in the major rehabilitation project for the Donghe Line in Qidong.
China Railway 18th Bureau on the Zhangji Expressway Reconstruction and Expansion Project The A2 benchmark project was the first to implement an intelligent collision-avoidance assistance system, achieving remarkable results and being featured on CCTV’s “News Live Room” as a “model smart construction site.”
Hunan Provincial Department of Transport The 14th Construction Section of the Liling–Louxing Expressway has equipped its rollers with an automatic anti-collision voice alert system, thereby directly ensuring the safety of both construction personnel and equipment.
Customer Pain Points
1. Large vehicle blind spots: Due to their large size, rollers often make it difficult for drivers to fully perceive their surroundings when turning, reversing, or operating in confined spaces, which can impair situational awareness and lead to collisions.
2. Adverse construction conditions and obstructed visibility: During roller compaction, operators may encounter adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, and dust, making it difficult to promptly detect obstacles and significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
3. Delayed human response: The average human reaction time is 0.7 seconds (which may be longer in emergency situations), making collisions more likely due to unexpected events.
4. Scarcity of radar systems dedicated to large vehicles: Most millimeter-wave radars currently available on the market are automotive radars with a pitch angle of ≤30°, which is insufficient for effectively accommodating large vehicles.

Millimeter-Wave Radar-Based Solutions
SR73F millimeter-wave radar
The SR73F is a vehicle-mounted millimeter-wave radar sensor developed and manufactured by Hunan Nalai Technology. It accurately measures target distance, speed, and angle by transmitting electromagnetic waves and receiving the echoes. The radar is available in two output configurations: side-output and rear-output. It features a compact form factor (side-output version: 96.2 × 57.6 × 24.1 mm; rear-output version: 75.7 × 57.2 × 18.4 mm), high precision, support for up to 64 detected targets, stable range measurement up to 40 meters, and a wide field of view of 120°. It is widely used in anti-collision applications for road rollers.

Alarm Description
When a target enters the alarm zone, the driver’s display immediately issues an alert, while an external buzzer sounds to warn pedestrians or animals. The alarm system operates on three levels (as shown in the zoning diagram), and the detection range for each level can be configured.
As the target approaches the radar, the buzzer alarm frequency increases as the distance decreases, with a continuous long beep in the closest proximity.
